Energy Systems Monitoring

When EnergyWitness™ is first installed in a campus or facility, the first order of business is always a diagnostic program. There are hundreds of issues detected that require corrective measures. Once an action plan is in place and you are making corrections, you can start to focus on keeping your facility running at peak efficiency—an ongoing monitoring process. Equipment failures or modifications, changing loads due to weather or space use, or variances in purchased utilities can all effect your energy systems operation. Continual monitoring is the only way to keep systems running smoothly and to catch new issues. Data is the only way to effectively monitor.

It's All About the Data (the 98% You're Not Looking At)

Your BAS, other energy system components, and energy suppliers are providing you with a huge amount of data. Data that can tell you how your campus/facility is operating. Unfortunately, you're throwing 98% of it away. Let's look at the numbers. A large facility may have 20,000 control and monitoring points, each one generating data. If you sample each point at 15 minute intervals, you've gathered 1,920,000 meaningful pieces of data a day. That's over 700 million data intervals a year.

How much do sites typically keep and see? You might have anywhere from a dozen trend logs up to a couple hundred, capturing a tiny fraction of the available information. Regular monitoring of 2% of the data available is a generous estimate. Data—a complete, holistic, and historical view—is the basis for effective monitoring of operations, energy efficiency, and energy costs. It's no wonder EnergyWitness enables our customers to find all the issues that it does. It captures and uses the data that's previously been thrown away.

Monitor 50X More Information in Less Time

So how do you monitor 2 million data intervals a day, or see how your facility is functioning over the course of a week (13.4 million data points) or a month (57.6 million points)? If it were easy, you'd already be doing it. EnergyWitness does the hard work of data collection and management, and provides you with a graphical view of the data. Want to see how each building is running, or how your chiller plant is functioning campus-wide? EWViewer lets you select the information you want and see a series of trend line graphs. For regular monitoring, you need to run through the data quickly to see how your energy systems are operating. All of the data, not just two percent.

Delta T report: In addition to Delta T of the building primary supply & return temperatures and building primary & secondary chilled water systems, trends were added to chart to provide more information about building and cooling operation.

With EWViewer you can monitor thousands of intervals in just a few seconds. The graphical display shows several related trend lines at once—typically five to ten. The display is nearly instantaneous due to how EnergyWitness organizes and stores the data. If everything is normal, an energy engineer can evaluate a graph and move on to the next in about three seconds. It's actually faster to monitor 100% of your data with EnergyWitness than it is to deal with the two percent you normally see today.

Stop Treating Symptoms and Fix the Problem

The benefits of proactively monitoring all your systems are enormous. It allows you to be able to finally get out of fire fighting mode. Alarms from your BAS are a reactive measure. Isolated to the particular event that triggered them, they have no context, no trend line data or related system measurements, they are a symptom of who-knows-what. The result is that the energy engineers see significant numbers of alarms, sometimes hundreds per day, and just ignore them due to lack of useful information. Monitoring through EnergyWitness gives you a visual display of the data and your operations. You see any issues that develop in context with trend history information as well as the trends of related components. When you discover an issue you can capture it through EWIssueTracker and return for further diagnosis later, when you can get to the real cause of the problem and fix it properly.
